6TH GRADE SERVICE PROJECT 2017
The 6th grade class organized donations to be delivered to residents and patients on Christmas Day. Lexi York, Brody Sternhagen, Ethan Licht, Heather Schafbuch, Kaylee York, Janessa Blomme, and Nolan Pirkl joined Mrs. Lender on Christmas Day to make deliveries to the Grinnell Regional Medical Center, St. Francis Manor, and Brookhaven Nursing Home. Goodie trays were also delivered to the staff at those locations. Many positive comments were received from family members through letters and personal contacts. One of the hospital recipient's wife wrote a hear-warming letter to the class telling that her husband had suffered a debilitating stroke and they were devastated that he wouldn't be going home-but would instead be heading to the nursing home. She went on to tell how the visit on Christmas Day brought a brightness to their sad day. It touched the 6th grade so much had they have decided to "adopt" Don while he is at the nursing home. Students have signed up for every week to write to Don, make cards for him and generally try to brighten his day. They will be collecting dimes for Don to use for a birthday gift in mid-February. Sometimes the greatest lessons learned are not in the books. Again, Mrs. Lender and the students appreciate the support from everyone for this project.
